Yevgeny Pakhomov was born in Stavropol in 1880. He finished a gymnasium in Tbilisi in 1876. In 1900, he graduated from Saint Petersburg Archaeological Institute and in 1902 from Technical Institute. From 1902 to 1916, he worked as an engineer at Transcaucasian Excise Department. He was involved in the construction of Kars-Ardahan-Erzurum railway project in the capacity of a military engineer. He traveled a lot across the South Caucasus to study ancient monuments. In 1919, he moved to Baku, where he contributed considerably to the establishment of a museum of Azerbaijani history. In 1920, Yevgeny Pakhomov was elected a member of the Scientific Society for Muslim East Studies at Baku State University. This marked the beginning of his teaching career at BSU, where he gave lectures on numismatics and archaeology of Eastern countries. From 1922 to 1954, he headed the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics. In 1941, he was made an associate professor and in 1946 professor at the department. In 1955, he received an honorary scientist title. In 1955, Yevgeny Pakhomov was elected a corresponding member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. He worked as a research fellow at the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography, Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. He is the founder of numismatics in Azerbaijan. Yevgeny Pakhomov headed a number of archaeological expeditions. He published more than 100 papers, with most of them addressing Caucasian numismatics. Many of the issues he studied had never been researched before. In accordance with his will, his collection was donated to Azerbaijan History Museum, Georgian State Museum, State Hermitage and State History Museum in Moscow. The numismatic material that Yevgeny Pakhomov had collected for over 65 years is now kept in museums in Baku, Tbilisi, Irevan, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He received the “Order of Glory” in 1945, and was awarded certificates of recognition by the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR in 1960 and 1965.
