Yaqub Mahmudov was born in 1939. From 1956 to 1962, he studied at Baku State University, Faculty of History, graduating with honors. He defended a PhD thesis in 1966, and achieved a ScD degree at the Thesis Council under the Faculty of History, Moscow State University, in 1989. He is a corresponding member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and “Merited Scientist”. During his working career he has held a number of key posts, including a scientific and senior scientific editor at Azerbaijan Encyclopedia, head and deputy editor-in-chief of world history and Azerbaijani history editorial desks, director general of Azerbaijan Encyclopedia Publishing and Printing Society, senior teacher and associate professor at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, associate professor and head (from 1991 till present) of the Department of Ancient and Middle Ages History and deputy dean and dean (1986-1990; 1994-2005) of the Faculty of History, Baku State University, deputy chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1992-1993). He has served as director of the Institute of History, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, since September, 2004. Yaqub Mahmudov has published more than 1000 monographs, books, textbooks, handbooks, papers and articles on the history of Azerbaijan, and translated a number of monumental works. He is the editor of two-volume “Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic”, and a member of the editorial staff of “Nakhchivan Encyclopedia”. He has supervised and contributed to the publication of a number of monumental works, including “History of Qarabagh” (in 6 languages), “History of Nakhchivan” (in 2 languages), “History of Iravan” (in 4 languages), “Genocide of Historical Names” (in 2 languages), “Historical Atlas of Azerbaijan”. His “Azerbaijan and Europe: Diplomatic Relations in Middle Ages (Aghqoyunlu and Safavi states) book was published in New York and Moscow, “Azerbaijan and Europe: mutual relations in the age of Aghqoyunlu (2nd half of the 15th century)”, “History of Azerbaijan: Early renaissance (2nd half of the 9th century – early 13th century) monographs came out in Los Angeles, “A Brief History of Azerbaijani Statehood” book was published in Pakistan and Ukraine”, “Triumph of Heydar Aliyev Ideas” monograph came out in Ukraine. He has addressed a number of international symposia. He is a full member of the International Academy of Contemporary Sciences named after Lotfi Zadeh. Yaqub Mahmudov is the recipient of “Shohrat” and “Sharaf” orders, State Award, Ataman Anton Golovaty order and a number of high awards. He is a member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2nd, 3rd, 4th convocations).
