The research lab "World Azerbaijanis: history-demography" was established by the order of the Ministry of Education and Rector of BSU in 1994 at the Faculty of History.From 1994 to 2005 this science laboratory Honored Scientist, academic research directed by Y.M.Mahmudov. In 2001 at the Faculty of History a scientific-research center “Azerbaijan studies” was established and the research unit “World Azerbaijanis: history-demography” was included in its structure.
Since 2010, the section "World Azerbaijanis: history-demography" has been re-operating under the Department of "History of Azerbaijan (on natural faculties)". The scientific direction of the ETL is historical, demographic, demographic and population problems. Laboratory research demographic processes that have occurred in historically throughout Azerbaijan, including occupied Azerbaijani lands,analyzed based on statistical data.The Concept of Demographic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan, National Strategy for the Development of Science in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2009-2015, State Programs on the Socio-Economic Development of the Regions make historical and demographic studies necessary for study the historical roots of the problems of modern populations in Azerbaijan.For this reason currently studying scientific studies that promote the socio-economic development of the regions and the problems of the population in the regions.
The results of scientific research are communicated to the public through conferences and publications, thus the scientific results are included in the scientific circulation involved in historical research.The results of the research are reflected in 9 monographs, about 100 scientific articles and the laboratory scientific collection of "World Azerbaijanis: History and Modernity". The research lab "World Azerbaijanis: history-demography" is the main training center in the country in the field of demography, where a historical-demographic school is formed.
Successful researches in the historical and demographic area have been conducted during the past period. Over the years, 13 graduate and postgraduate students of ETL have successfully defended their dissertations.
