TOFIQ TALISH VALIYEV (1934-2014) Historian

Tofiq Valiyev was born on 7 May 1934. He started his working career in 1951. After graduating from Baku State University, Faculty of History, he was dispatched to the Institute of History, Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, where he rose through the ranks from a junior to a leading research fellow from 1958 to 1990. In 1966, he defended a PhD thesis, and obtained a ScD degree in 1986 and professorship in 1990. His research areas included the emergence and development of capitalist relations in industry and agriculture. In 1990, Tofiq Valiyev became a professor at the Department of History of Eastern European Nations (Department of History of Slavic Countries since 2001), and headed it from 1993 to 2014. From 1970 to 1973, he served as scientific secretary at the Institute of History. From 1993 to 1997, he chaired Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education. From 1995 to 2002, he headed Expert Council on history, theology, philosophy, psychology and pedagogy at the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2007, he served as chair of Expert Council on History and Political Sciences. From 2005 to 2014, Tofiq Valiyev was editor of “Baku University News” journal (Humanity). He was the recipient of “Merited Scientist” title and several certificates of recognition of the Ministry of Education. In 2004, he was elected a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
