Karim Shukurov was born in the village of Qaradaghli, Mirbashir region (Tartar) in 1956. In 1972, he finished Barda city secondary school No1. From 1972 to 1977, he studied at Azerbaijan State University, Faculty of History. Until 1980, he was employed as a teacher and vice-principal at Barda city secondary school No1. From 1980 to 1983, he did postgraduate studies at Azerbaijan State University. In 1984, he defended a PhD thesis, and achieved a ScD degree in 2007 and professorship in 2012. Karim Shukurov has authored 11 books and monographs, and more than 100 papers. He has attended international conferences in Ankara, Kars, Prague and Berlin. On 25 May 2012, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan conferred the State Award upon him for his contribution to a series of books on the history of Qarabagh, Nakhchivan and Iravan khanates.
