JAMIL BAHADUR QULIYEV (1927-2010) Historian

Jamil Quliyev was born in 1927. In 1944, he entered Azerbaijan State University, Faculty of History. In 1946, he was transferred to Lomonosov Moscow State University. He graduated in 1949, and embarked on postgraduate studies. In 1952, he defended a PhD thesis, achieving a ScD degree in 1971. In 1972, he was elected a corresponding member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, becoming a full member in 1980. He was awarded the title“Merited Scientist” in 1979. Jamil Quliyev started his working career in 1952, when he joined the Faculty of History, Azerbaijan State University. In the 1970s, he worked as a teacher and professor at the university. From 1958 to 1972, he served as deputy director of the Party History Institute under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. From 1972 to 1978, he was director of the Institute of History, in 1989-1990 rector of Azerbaijan State University, from 1975 to 1988 editor-in-chief of Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia, from 1976 to 1991 and from 1997 to 2010 vice-president of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, from 1990 to 1997 senior research fellow at the Institute of History of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, from 1997 to 2010 member of the Presidium of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and from 2007 to 2010 adviser at the National Academy of Sciences. For 20 years academician Quliyev headed Thesis Council on history. He supervised 13 PhD and three ScD students to completion. He published more than 400 papers. In 1974, he received State Award of Azerbaijan SSR. Jamil Quliyev was also the recipient of “Shohrat” and “Istiqlal” orders. He was a member of Azerbaijan Supreme Soviet (10th-11th convocation).
