JAFAR MAMMAD JAFAROV (1960) Historian

Jafar Jafarov was born on 21 April 1960. Upon his graduation from Moscow State University, faculty of History, he embarked on postgraduate studies in 1983. In 1987, he defended a PhD thesis, and returned to Baku. He achieved a ScD degree in 2010, and was then made a professor. From 1987-1994, he served as a senior laboratory assistant at the Faculty of History, as a teacher, senior teacher and associate professor at the Department of History of Azerbaijan, BSU. From 1990-1994, he was employed as secretary at the Doctoral Council on History, and scientific head of Student Scientific Society. From 1992-1994, Jafar Jafarov served as deputy dean of the Faculty of History. In 2000-2001, as a winner of the Fulbright Fellowship Program of the U.S. Department of State, he conducted researches and gave lectures at New York University Wagner School of Public Service. During this period he also worked at E-Government project at the UN Headquarters. At the first congress of World Azerbaijanis, he was elected a member of the Board of Directors of the Coordination Council of World Azerbaijanis Congress (November, 2001). He has attended nearly 90 international seminars, conferences and symposia in 34 countries. He has published nearly 80 papers and methodological handbooks in local and foreign periodicals. By the Executive Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, dated 5 July 2006, Jafar Jafarov was appointed rector of the newly-established Azerbaijan Tourism Institute. He is a member of the Thesis Council under Nakhchivan branch of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and Scientific and Advisory Council of the Documents Archive, Administrative Department, Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He is editor-in-chief of “Tourism and hospitality studies” journal, and a member of the editorial staff of “Cultural life” and “Geostrategy” journals. He is president of SKAL International Baku public organization.
