Havil Havilov was born on 9 May 1938. In 1958, he entered Baku State University, graduating with honors in 1963. From 1963 to 1966, he worked as a teacher at a secondary school n Tapqaraqoyunlu village and principal of an evening school. In 1966, he did postgraduate studies in Baku. He defended a PhD thesis in 1969. The same year he started his working career at Baku State University, which he joined as a lecturer at the Department of General History. He was promoted to a senior lecturer and associate professor. In 1976, he joined the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography. Havil Havilov achieved a ScD degree in 1989, and was made a professor in 1990. From 1992 until his death, he headed the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography, BSU. He authored five monographs and textbooks, over 50 articles, textbooks and handbooks.
