Eldar Ismayilov was born on 30 March 1950. In 1973, he graduated with honors from Lomonosov Moscow State University. From 1973 to 1976, he did postgraduate studies at Moscow State University, Faculty of History. He defended a PhD thesis in 1977, achieving a ScD degree in 1991 and professorship in 1992. From 1977 to 1980, Eldar Ismayilov headed the Education Sector of Baku State University, from 1980 to 1983 served as a senior lecturer and from 1983 to 1991 as an associate professor at the Department of History of USSR (Soviet period), from 1990 to 1994 as dean of the Faculty of History, from 1996 to 1999 as head of the Department of Source Criticism, Historiography and Methodology of Azerbaijani History. He worked as a professor at the Department of History of Slavic Nations from 1999 until his death. He authored a number of textbooks, monographs, more than 100 papers and articles.
