Aslan Atakishiyev was born on 10 April 1930. In 1947, he entered Baku State University, Faculty of History, graduating with honors in 1952. In 1952-1953, he did postgraduate studies at Baku State University, the Department of History of Communist Party of USSR. In 1953, he started his working career at BSU in the capacity of a lecturer at the Department of History of USSR. He was promoted to a senior lecturer, associate professor and in 1971 to a professor. From 1971 to 1994, Aslan Atakishiyev headed the Department of History of USSR. He also served as a professor at the Department of History of Turkic and Caucasian Nations, and Department of History of Turkic Nations. His research interests laid in history of the 20th century culture of the Azerbaijani people. He defended a PhD thesis in 1957, achieving a ScD degree in 1971. He supervised 54 PhD and four ScD students to completion. Aslan Atakishiyev was an official opponent for more than 100 PhD and ScD students. He published more than 50 papers and nine monographs. He contributed a lot to the scientific life of the country as well as Baku State University. He sat on methodological councils of the Institute of History, Pedagogical Institute, USSR Higher Education Ministry and Azerbaijani Ministry of Education. He was the holder of “Labor Veteran Medal” and “Merited Scientist” tittle.
