ALIOVSAT NAJAFQULU QULIYEV (1922-1993) Historian

Aliovsat Quliyev was born in 1922. In 1939, he entered Azerbaijan State University, Faculty of History. In 1942, he was recommended for the post of a history teacher at the Faculty of Philology by the Department of History of USSR. The same year he was elected chairman of the Trade Unions Committee at the faculty. A year later, in 1943, Aliovsat Quliyev was elected chair of the Trade Unions Committee of Azerbaijan State University. In 1944, he graduated with honors, and was recommended for the post of a teacher at the Department of History of Azerbaijan. He did his postgraduate studies in history of Azerbaijan. In 1944-1945, he was employed as a teacher, senior teacher and associate professor at the departments of history of Azerbaijan and USSR, Azerbaijan State University. In 1948 and from 1950-1952, he headed the Faculty of History. Aliovsat Quliyev served as director of the Institute of History and Philosophy, Academy of Sciences, Azerbaijan SSR, from 1952 to 1958. From 1958 to 1965, he was a senior research fellow, from 1965 to 1967 head of the Department of Modern History of Azerbaijan, and from 1967 to 1969 as director of the Institute of History, Academy of Sciences, Azerbaijan SSR. Aliovsat Quliyev achieved a ScD degree in history in 1961, and obtained professorship in history in 1962. He was elected a corresponding member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1968. An acclaimed historian, he laid the fundamentals of history of Azerbaijan as a subject, established Azerbaijani school of historiography, and made a crucial contribution to the promotion of Azerbaijani science internationally. In 1958-1963, he supervised and personally contributed to the publishing of “History of Azerbaijan” three-volume book. His works largely focused on socio-economic history of Azerbaijan. Aliovsat Quliyev was the recipient of the “Order of Red Labor Flag” and several medals.
