Ali Aliyev was born on 10 May 1927. In 1945, he entered Baku State University, Faculty of Law, graduating with honors in 1950. From 1950 to 1955, he did postgraduate studies in the history of USSR at Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute. In 1955, he defended a PhD thesis, achieving a ScD degree in 1966 and professorship in 1967. From 1960 until his death, Ali Aliyev worked as an associate professor, professor and department head at Baku State University. From 1973 to 1976, he headed the Department of Archive Studies and from 1977 to 1988 the Department of History of USSR. He published more than 160 papers, 10 monographs, textbooks and handbooks. He supervised 12 PhD students to completion, with eight of them then achieving a ScD degree.
